To this concerts and amateurdramatic entertainments were added; but the clubdid not prosper, being probably in advance ofthe time, and much opposed by parents of theold-fashioned, straight-laced school. It was alsoattacked by the caricaturists, who, by driving theladies away, succeeded in staying it outright. Almost in the centre of the eastern side, nearlyon the site of the Alhambra, stood the AnatomicalMuseum of John Hunter, the celebrated surgeon,where was formed the nucleus of the HunterianMuseum, now at the College of Surgeons, LincolnsInn Fields. It was in the year 1783 that JohnHunter became owner of No. 28, on the east sideof the square, and at the back of it, on groundleading to Castle Street, he built his famousMuseum of Comparative Anatomy. In 1785 theerection was complete, and one of the first acqui-sitions of its owner was the skeleton of OBrien, theIrish giant, which may still be seen, as we have cussion in the Board-room of St. Georges Hospital,in the sixty-fourth year of his age, without anequal in the world in his combined character ofsurgeon and naturalist. He was buried in St.ALirtins Church, and his widow would gladly haveraised a monument to his memory in ^VestminsterAbbey, but he died poor, and she could not paythe Dean
