(Buy exclusive historic East Yorkshire prints from East Riding Photos http://picturearchivesorg/eastridingphotos) Old Wesley Chapel, Walkergate c.1900 John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, first visited Beverley in 1759. By his last visit in 1790, there was a thriving society, providing an alternative to the Anglican churches and ministers that continued to dominate the religious life of the community at that time. A new Methodist chapel opened in Walkergate in 1805. One of the many Methodist chapels built in Beverley at this time, it provided a capacity for 700 people. A Sunday school was added in the 1820s, and by 1825, the Walkergate chapel became the head of the newly formed Beverley Methodist Circuit. The minister’s house and a graveyard were located behind the chapel towards Toll Gavel. By 1890, construction began on the land behind to provide a more prominent location. In 1903 the building was demolished and a new schoolroom was built on the site facing onto Walkergate.
