Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Wardour Castle ruins - geograph.org.uk - 694506.jpg |
English: Old Wardour Castle ruins Built in the 1390s for John, the 5th Lord Lovel, the castle was always intended as a comfortable and luxurious residence, rather than an impregnable bastion. After some remodelling in the 1570s for its new owner Sir Matthew Arundell, it then suffered part destruction during the Civil War sieges of 1643 and 1644. During the next century it was abandoned, and incorporated as a romantic ruin into the landscaped grounds of nearby New Wardour House. Grade I Listed.
