Summary

[edit]
Description Built between 1873 and 1884, this Second Empire-style building was designed by Alfred Bult Mullett under the supervision of James G. Hill and Thomas Walsh to serve as the United States Post Office and Custom House for St. Louis, Missouri. The Old United States Customhouse and Post Office housed the US District Court until 1935, and remained in use as a branch post office until 1970. The building features a gray granite exterior with a red granite base, a rusticated exterior at the first floor, doric and ionic pilasters and columns, decorative trim at the windows bays, two-over-two double-hung windows with transoms, a cornice with brackets and dentils, a moat surrounding the building that allows light into the basement, a mansard roof above the main entrance on Olive Street, with a heavily decorated front dormer, and a large atrium in the center of the building below a skylight. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1968, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. The building today houses a variety of offices for federal departments, as well as private organizations, including the downtown campus of Lindenwood University.
