English: Old Torquay College (Vivian Institute), overlooking Fleet Street, Torquay This building,originally called the Vivian Institute with its classical portico, sits somewhat uneasily opposite the Fleet Walk development, which, in the 1980s, swept away the old buildings and was meant to have a major regenerative effect on Torquay. It is debatable what it achieved and was controversial at the time. This unusual building has a dominant effect, above the level of the street, and though it is now canteen/bar, it speaks strongly of its former function, with its large windows to allow the access of plenty of light, and its referential architecture - the pillars of (artistic) wisdom, perhaps? It was used for a time by art classes at South Devon College. I believe the building was sold by South Devon College in the last half of the 20th century. The name Vivian was transferred to a small College coffee bar/restaurant on the Torre campus,the Vivian Suite, where works of art were occasionally displayed. The College Torre campus is now a housing development.
