Summary

[edit]
Description As I do not have a history book with me that features this house in it at the moment, I cannot give all the specifics as to who built it and when. What I do know, however, is that the house was built as a combination residence and store around 1900, which served the Cowarts area of Caney Fork, which was then an isolated rural farming community. The simple wood-frame vernacular Folk Victorian-style House features a two-story front wing with a bay window on one end of the house and a centrally located chimney and porch, with a rear one-story wing that mirrors the elements of the first floor of the front wing. The house operated as a combination store and residence until 1970, when improved access and transportation to other areas, including Tuckasegee, Cullowhee, East LaPorte, and Sylva rendered the store uneconomical, much as it had rendered the old seven-room brick Johns Creek School obsolete five years prior. The building was then fully converted into a private residence, and more recently had all of its windows replaced with vinyl, which sadly has removed much of the character the building once had. It appears that it has been in the same family for quite some time, and it remains one of a few historic buildings from when the community was a self-sufficient rural hamlet.
