Description
English: An old Soviet era grounded socket (3 pins). Such sockets appeared in the Soviet Union in 1988 and were installed in kitchens near pipes up until 1991. These I-type ("Australian" style) sockets have not been generally adopted and, after the fall of the Soviet Union, European Schuko sockets were introduced into ex-Soviet countries. At present, the barrier to the use of Schuko sockets in old Soviet buildings is the existing TN-C earthing system (where an "Earthed" Neutral conductor - without a separate Earth conductor is used.) While old-time TN-C networks were built everywhere, the modern code requires at least TN-C-S - with separate Neutral and Earth conductors. Hence, many existing installations are not suitable for using grounded/earthed appliances.
