Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Red House bathhouse at Allegany State Park, as seen on a November 2021 morning. Dating to 1931, the inauguration of this facility next to the Red House Lake bathing beach marked the end of the first major wave of development in Allegany State Park, which began about a half-decade previously under the supervision of state-employed architect William E. Haugaard and comprised the construction of Red House Lake, the park administration building, and the five so-called "Kings Row" houses where park staff lodged, as well as extensive landscaping work throughout the Red House Area of the park. Like the other structures built in the era (not only in Allegany but throughout the New York State Park system), its architecture is characterized by heavy use of wood and stone sourced onsite and a rustic, Tudor Revival-influenced aesthetic that was designed to blend in with its natural milieu. Indeed, the bathhouse Haugaard designed four years later for Lake Erie State Park is identical to the one at Red House save for the entrance, which was placed on the opposite side of the building.
