English: Line-up of locomotives in Old Oak Common Locomotive Yard. View westwards, towards the roundhouses. The Depot had no less than four large roundhouses, but even so on a Sunday numerous locomotives had to rest in ranks outside. The front one here is '8750' class 0-6-0PT No. 8763 (built 10/33, withdrawn 8/62), which spent all its life here working empty stock up to Paddington or else on local goods trips and shunting. On the left is the double-sided coaling plant. Old Oak was the primary Locomotive Depot of the GWR and BR Western Region (coded 81A by BR); it was primarily concerned with passenger work, main-line freight work being handled by Southall (81C). Old Oak had an allocation in 1954 of 167 steam engines:- 5 4-6-2 (BR Standard), 69 4-6-0, 7 2-8-0, 4 0-6-0, 14 2-6-2T and 68 0-6-0T; also the two experimental gas-turbine electric express locomotives and 12 0-6-0 Diesel-electric shunters. The Depot closed on 22/3/65 and was succeeded by a Diesel Depot on part of the site. |
