Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1751, this stone chapel was the main worship space for the Moravian settlers of Bethlehem prior to the construction of the Central Moravian Church in 1806-08. The building replaced the earlier Saal room in the adjacent Moravian Gemein House, which was utilized for community worship services for the first decade of Moravian settlement in Bethlehem. The building features a rusticated fieldstone exterior, front gable roof with a fanlight at the gable end, six-over-six double-hung windows, a recessed arched front entrance with an exterior staircase, tapered buttresses on the side facades, and is attached to the Bell House to the east and the Gemein House to the south (rear). The building continues to serve as a venue for the Central Moravian Church, and remains in use for some worship services, as well as weddings and funerals. The chapel is a contributing structure in the Central Bethlehem Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and expanded to include additional buildings in 1988, and a contributing structure in the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
