Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Mill - geograph.org.uk - 1450337.jpg |
English: Old Mill. A cotton mill was established in the Orry in the early 1790s; was rebuilt on an enlarged site and subsequently modified several times before destruction by fire in 1876. It was rebuilt on a smaller scale, and was derelict by the early twentieth century. At its peak the mill, the property of Messrs. McLean and Brodie of Glasgow employed four-hundred people. The mill had 15,312 spindles and was set in motion by a water-wheel of cast iron forty-five feet in diameter and equivalent to the power of fifty horses. About 740 cubic feet of water per minute falls on the wheel. Water was supplied from three lochs; Picketlaw 1432415 , Mid Dam 1539538 and High Dam (formerly High Loch) 1539103 situated on the high ground on Eaglesham Moor. All that remains of the mill today is the fragments of three buildings and a wheel-pit 1617328. The stone from the buildings were used to build a dry stane wall bounding Eaglesham House and Glasgow Road. Another mill was built at Millhall 1480492 in 1822 by John White. This was a much smaller concern and mainly produced spinning shuttle cord for power-looms and candle wicks.
