Eutrop. viii. 11.), in which THERMAE. 657 were found the statues of the FarneseHercules, the Flora Farnese, andthe group of Dirce, tied by Zethusand Amphion to a wild bull, all pre-served in the Bourbon Museum atNaples ; and the ihermm of Diocletian,covering parts of both the Viminaland Quirinal, a single room of whichwas converted by Michel Angelointo a church, Santa Maria degliAngeli, the largest, after St. Peters,in Rome. The annexed illustration shows the ground-plan of the thermceof Caracalla, from a survey made bythe Italian architect Pardini, with afew slight alterations in the restoredportions, adopted in conformity withthe gymnasium at Ephesus, of whicha plan is inserted p. 324., and which,by comparison with the present one,will testify the general uniformity ofprinciple existing in the distributionand design of these two classes ofbuildings.
