[edit]DescriptionOld Malpas Road looking north - geograph.org.uk - 1443219.jpg |
English: Old Malpas Road looking north Looking across the wall of the M4 motorway towards the Etap hotel.
Officially, this is Malpas Road, but Malpas Road is also a few metres away, to the west, so to avoid confusion, the street seen here ought to be called Old Malpas Road, and indeed some locals use this name. The problem arose in the 1960s when dozens of houses on Malpas Road were demolished to make way for the motorway. A new part of Malpas Road, with a motorway interchange, was built. The house numbers along Malpas Road heading away from the city centre reach 103 and then there are no houses as the motorway roundabout is approached. After going under the motorway, Malpas Road continues north. The next house is 243. On the south side of the motorway, the tops of the houses numbered 153-177 are visible from new Malpas Road, but to anyone unaware of the situation, it is far from obvious that these are the 'missing' houses. Residents of these houses are frequently inconvenienced by failed or late deliveries, taxis, etc. because of the confusion. More seriously, there was a case recently where an ambulance spent 10 minutes driving up and down Malpas Road trying to find the house where an emergency had been reported. Access to the next part of "Old" Malpas road is by a pedestrian underpass, which starts next to the motorway wall. |
