English: Old Library Clock Tower, Stourbridge The Old Library, Stourbridge, is a grade II listed building (19 April 1989), and one of the finest buildings in Stourbridge town Centre. It was originally designed by the architect Frederick Woodward (who was also the Council's Surveyor) and constructed in 1905 and funded by Andrew Carnegie, who, at the time was the worlds richest man. Not only a Public Library it also had an Art and Technical School and a Girl's Secondary School on its upper floors. It has an impressive terracotta facade, stained glass windows and ornamental stairway balustrades. The clock tower was added later in the 1930s. It was erected in memory of Isaac Nash who was a key figure in the library's conception. He laid the foundation stone of the library in February 1904. |
