Summary

[edit]
Description

The oldest church in Inverness, and set atop St Michael's Mount, from where St Columba is reputed to have preached circa 565AD. This view is taken from Church Lane, which is at a lower level, and the area in front of the church is where Jacobite prisoners of war were summarily executed by firing squad in the days after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The forecast today (Friday) said "Sunshine and showers" and it wasn't wrong. In between the showers it did become really nice, so our usual weekly walk around Inverness City Centre - though shortened - was not ruined. The sun came out as we approached the Greig Street footbridge over the River Ness and the "busy" sky set off the surroundings nicely. These photographs were all taken either from, of, or adjacent to the Greig Street foot bridge (suspension bridge) which was built in 1881 to provide easier access to the growing residential area on the West Bank of the river to the Town (now city) Centre on the East bank. Primarily it afforded workers a shorter route to reach the various industries sited in or near the Centre. The alternative was quite a long diversion to either of the two road bridges then existing. The bridge and its environs continues to provide a relatively peaceful view of the river, assisted by the lack of vehicular traffic nearby, as the roads either side are currently closed while flood prevention measures (mainly a wall) are erected. Almost all the churches in Inverness were until relatively recently along the riverside, but several of the buildings are now in alternative use (e.g. apartments, funeral home) as the population has spread to the suburbs and churches have been built there to replace some of those in the Centre. The array of spires is a lovely sight, and the tree-lined river banks assist in augmenting the view, by partially obscuring some of the concrete monstrosities of 1960s buildings which replaced older shops and housing.
