Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Fire Station, West Port - geograph.org.uk - 1419596.jpg |
English: Old Fire Station, West Port. The site of Portsburgh Fire Station, one of four stations built by James Braidwood for the Edinburgh Fire Establishment in the 1820s. One of Braidwood's guiding principles was to locate stations uphill to enable the large and heavy escape ladders to be trundled more easily downhill to the location of a fire. (In this case, the station served mainly the Grassmarket area downhill from today's West Port.)
