Description This old farmhouse on Moses Creek in Jackson County’s Caney Fork Township is currently vacant, but still appears to have no major structural problems, sagging, or major rot, a testament to the longevity and rot-resistance of the Locust wood that makes up the foundation of the porch. Dating to around the turn of the 20th Century, though possibly earlier, this type of farmhouse was once common in the area, though it has been supplanted by more modern homes with indoor plumbing and air conditioning, a welcome change for residents who once had a hardscrabble life out on their homesteads in the mountains. The lack of preservation of many of these homes is saddening to me, however, though I do realize the remoteness and deep family roots prevent much from being done about it. My own extended family owns a similar house in South Carolina, an old stagecoach inn built at Providence in the 1700s on the old stagecoach road between Columbia and Charleston.
