. GeneralCampbell searched the islands of Barra and of South Uist: and LongIsland, where also Charles hid himself, was surrounded by ships ofwar. Strange to say, at one period, while he was tossing about inthe rough waters surrounding these islands, he saw and might havereached with ease two French frigates, which would at once haveborne him off in safety ; but they were mistaken for English vessels,and so helped only to increase the unfortunate fugitives alarms.How he managed to escape the hot pursuit that was made for hintthrough the islands is wonderful. Ever moving about as the huntersmoved, it is only to be accounted for by the circumstance that nearlyall the residents must have been in the secret, and have proved them-selves worthy of the confidence reposed.
