herstreet. A big, heavy negro was one daycoasting down Mt. Vernon Street on glareice, and just before he reached Charles 38 OLD BOSTON BOYS Street a sledge drawn by one horse movingat a walk came into sight. The coaster hadno time to think or swerve from his course,and with lightning speed shot under thehorses belly without touching a hoof. Itwas a close shave. Usually a boy stood at such a place tosignal to those about to start, when thecoast was clear. I remember a boy goingdown the Long Coast with one legstuck out for a rudder, as I have mentionedabove, when another sled, overtaking him,struck the projection, whirling him aroundso that he faced up hill, and the next sledstruck him full in the face, making sadwork. A funny incident occurred one morn-ing upon the Joy Street coast. A coloredwasherwoman, weighing some two hun-dred pounds, w^as ponderously and labori-ously picking her way down the icy path,carrying upon her head a large bundle oflaundered clotheS; She was so absorbed in
