Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Old Blue Coat school, 2001 The Blue Coat school buildings were designed by James Murray and constructed in 1856-57. Restoration has just about been completed and the building houses the Holy Trinity church centre. The lawn occupies the nave area of St Mary's cathedral which was destroyed after the Dissolution. This area was where the previous church centre was built in the 1970s. Several feet of earth have been excavated away. On the right, restoration is under way on New Buildings which date from about 1849-50 and housed looms un the upper floors which were rented out to independent weavers. The multi-paned windows designed for maximum light were characteristic of weavers' establishments. The weaving trade collapsed in 1860 and the building was later used by a 'ragged school' and as a drill hall. After several years as a store it lay empty during the 1990s.
