Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Bank, Halifax - geograph.org.uk - 1561723.jpg |
English: Old Bank, Halifax This road was constructed in or soon after 1741 by the Halifax and Wakefield Turnpike Trust. It was on or near to the original medieval road. It would be interesting to know whether the stone setts were laid when the road was first built, or later in the 19C. This part of the road was found to be too steep for main road traffic, and a new road was started in 1760 from North Bridge up New Bank. By the mid-19C many cottages had been built up Old Bank, and these still existed in 1930. Most had been demolished by 1950, and all of them have gone now. |
