The Okipa ceremony of the Mandans by George Catlin. Plate 10. The fasters try to get a vision

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The fasters are trying to get af vision. The man with the mask and an axe is ready to cut of a finger tip of the faster in front of him. The Okipa Maker is sitting in the center, smoking the sacred pipe of Lone Man. Catlin has painted four turtle drums although the Mandans only have three. One of the original four drums felt insulted and disapeared into a river. Bowers, Alfred W.: Mandan Social and Ceremonial Organization. Moscow, Idaho, 1991. Pages 111-163.
