It was not less sin-gular that in the field, almost every branch of the service should have as itsacknowledged chief an Ohio General. At the head of the army stood Grant,whom success, the absolute test in war, pronounced our greatest Soldier. Beyonda doubt Sherman was the most perfect master of marching and of the logistics0*^ war the Continent has ever seen. Competent critics, after surveying thewhole field, have placed Eosecrans at the headof our strategists.
