usual type found inthe Hopewell culture, consisting of two similar concavo-convexplates connected by central cylindrical columns. Those shownin Fig. 31 were made similar to the majority of the ear orna-ments of the Hopewell culture with the exception that one con-cavo-convex plate was replaced by a round and flat plate andsmaller in diameter by half an inch. The concavo-convex ear ornament is perhaps the most com-mon ornament made of copper used by primitive man, and nodoubt required great skill to manufacture. WOVEN FABRIC. The example of woven fabric shown in Fig. 31 was pre-served by the salts of copper. A coarse cloth had been placedover a matting on the floor of the grave. The matting was madeof bark, very coarsely woven, while only a few pieces of thecloth were preserved sufficiently to photograph. The wood handle covered with copper, as shown in Fig.31, is also of interest. The blade was apparently made of woodand was a continuation of the handle, which was preserved bycopper.
