Text Appearing Before Image:
most sheep were kept in Ohio and Brooke counties, wherethe Wheeling clay loam gives permanent blue grass pastures, which favor the profitable production of wool and mutton. Only fine-wooled sheep, the Delaines and Merinos, areraised. These give a good yield of wool, besides the lambs, whichare marketed in the fall and bring from $2 to $3 a head whensix months old. It is believed that the number of sheep couldbe profitably increased on the Wheeling clay loam, where protec-tion from dogs can be had. The dairy interests are confined almost exclusively to theterritory immediately surrounding the cities and villages. With-in a radius of three miles of Wheeling nearly every farm main-tains a dairy of from 10 to 50 cows, the average being 20. Littlefine-bred stock is kept. A few farmers within five miles fromthe city retail their milk daily. Others along the trolley linessend their milk to wholesale dealers in the city. Milk retails at8 cents a quart winter and summer, and at wholesale prices
