The effect on traffic density is illustrated by the factthat on the day the hand fired trip was run, its slow timeon the grade held back two other trains, which the higherspeed attained by the 3209 would have prevented. That the above is not an isolated case, 1 will refer to asimilar test made some time ago on the Pennsylvania Lines.The tests were made with two locomotives, one of the type 23 shown with stoker and an exactly similar locomotive with-out stoker.

CONSOLIDATION LOCOMOTIVE PENNSYLVANIA LINES WEST. These locomotives weigh 331,300 pounds on drivers,have a grate area of 55.13 square feet and 53,198 poundstractive force. In this test both locomotives were loaded to Stokerrating. which was on this particular division fifteen (15%)per cent in excess of regular rating. Really the results as shown need little comment.
