35^ Proceedings Railway Club of Pittsburgh. pick. The coal is so soft a punching machine will not workwell. Lately w^hen they get into places where the coal is alittle harder than it used to be they put a hole in the face andput a shot in there. It does not knock the coal down, but itkind of softens it so they can dig it more easily. But wherethey use machines they leave about four inches of the bottomcoal in the Pittsburgh seam. MR. L. H. TURNER: I was quite interested in that ques-tion. I have heard some of our locomotive firemen say that youwent about six inches under the bottom. MR. P. A. COEX: I would like to ask Mr. Cox whatper cent of the coal is never recovered, that is in the shape ofold stumps and ribs that are never drawn. A great many for-eign engineers visiting this country in 1904 and coming to theLouisiana Purchase Exposition expressed themselves as believ-ing that our methods were not very economical. MR. P. Y.
