A fine view of the most active springs and the surroundingmountains is obtained from an eminence upon which havehitherto stood the headquarters of the Park Superintendent,a building the removal of which is ,now in contemplation andmay be effected at any time. Directly in front looms, throughfloating clouds of steam, the glaring bulk of the principal snow-white terraces, 200 feet above the plateau at their base. Thisplateau is pitted with numerous caverns of various depths andsizes, which were once the basins of ancient springs, but arenow choked with shrubbery. Groups of pines or single treesfind suflicient nutriment in the crumbling calcareous deposit tosupport themselves.
