bon Paint Pot Basin.—This wonderful area, several acres in extent, is situated in the woods to the left ofthe road, about half a mile eastward of the bluff at the head ofthe Gibbon Canon. Clouds of vapor sufficiently indicate thelocality. There are, perhaps, five hundred mud and boilingsprings in the Basin. They are not in groups, but interspersedwith Natures charming fickleness. It is one of the most curioussights to watch the great pots of gurgling, splashing andexploding mud. Every color and shade of color is repre-sented,—white, orange, green, violet, purple, blue, brown anddrab. Clots of this pasty material, smooth to the touch asvelvet, are constantly thrown out and banked up around thecraters. The noise made by the bubbling compound is notunlike the thud of a steamers paddles striking the water. Thehot springs are of divers colors, and the water invariably aslimpid as crystal. Some of the pools are as green as anemerald, others as blue as a turquoise, and one spouting fount-

Indeed, the delicacy and variety of thecoloring and the beauty of the formations within the springsand on their scalloped margins are bewildering in their opu-lence. The water is highly impregnated with various salts, and the vapor reeks strongly. The many-tinted earths whichare heaped around the paint pots appear like the purest por-celain mass, ready for moulding by the potter. Over all theoperations in this strange natural laboratory there is a pall ofvapor which issues from clefts in the ground and fissures onthe sides of the sombre, tree-clad hills. Monument Geyser Basin.—Just at the entrance of theGibbon Canon, to the right of the road, there is a foot-bridgeover the stream. This leads to a trail on the opposite bank, pursuing which about a mile and a half over the rough slope ofMount Schurz, and at an elevation of i,ooo feet above theriver, the ^ Monument Geyser Basin is reached.
