ge. Westward lie the purple mountains, majestic in out-line, and clothed with the virgin forest of sombre pine. Inthe middle distance arise filmy columns of vapor from thegeysers and hot springs of the Upper Basin, floating upwardand fading into space as an incense offering to the Creator ofthe wondrously beautiful scene. Keplers Cascades are reallyquite bewitching in their loveliness, the harmony of the pictureleaving nothing to be desired, as the romantic is here pictur-esquely perfect, the colors of the vegetation on the rocks incontrast to the foaming water delighting the eye. The visitorreluctantly leaves this idyllic spot. Shoshone Lake.—This beautiful sheet of water, situatedabout nine miles south of the Upper Geyser Basin, from whichthere is a good trail leading to it, is almost in the shape of apurse, its outlet being at the bottom of the larger lobe, by abroad and sluggish stream, three miles in length, connect-ing it with Lewis Lake. Its greatest length is six miles and a

The shores are almosteverywhere bold and densely covered with timber. On itssouthwestern arm is an interesting geyser basin, of which theUnion Geyser is the principal attraction. This geyser hasthree small mounds or craters close together, each of whichhas an opening or vent. The three spout simultaneously,although the sm^allest one is rather insignificant. Duringeruption a column of water over one hundred feet in height,with volumes of steam, is projected with a steady roar andgreat force. The bead-like geyserite formation about thesecraters is quite beautiful, the color grading from yellow intogray, with pearly tints. Another geyser in this basin, calledthe Minute Man, has also a very finely ornamented crater,while the Shield, the Gourd, the Little Bulger
