Giant Geyser in Action. 80 YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. vertical and majestic column, except when it is swayed by thebreeze. There are many vents in the neighborhood of thisgeyser, which blow off steam and water violently, only ceasingtheir activity when the Giant himself is aroused. On the sameplatform with the Giant is another geyser, known as YoungFaithful. It has a mound of beautifully beaded geyserite, rising six feet above the level of the terrace. This geyser actscontinuously, with irregular spurts from ten to twenty feet. The Splendid.—This is a very powerful geyser which hasdeveloped great energy since 1881. It acts usually at intervalsof three hours, sometimes more frequently, throwing out aspreading column of water as high as that of Old Faithful, fora period of five to ten minutes. This geyser is situated on aridge almost due west from the Giant, and about 200 yardsfrom a conspicuous mound of white geyserite. There wouldseem to be some confusion as to the name of this geyse
