he Southern Counties Building, and into the Calk Colon, a shortstreet connecting the Alameda and the Isthmus. Ahead stretches out the greatcitrus orchard, a masterpiece in the Exposition work, which affords the visitorfrom the chilly north and east his best opportunity to view the orange andlemon and grapefruit, the kumquat and the tangerine at their very best. To the right, as one faces this orchard, lies the beginning of the Isthmus,or amusement street, which has succeeded the old time Pike and Midway.To the left extends the Alameda and the exhibits which border it, all ofsuch great importance that the visitor will go not once, but many times. Beyond the fire station lies the model intensive farm, and next that thegreat display of the International Harvester Company, the largest which thatgreat concern ever established anywhere. THE TEA PLANTATION On the east side of the Alameda, just beyond the citrus orchard, lies theLipton Tea Plantation, which is as unique in worlds fairs as is the citrusorchard. The tea plants which fill this plantation, are the first considerablenumber to take root in American soil. They were brought from estates of SirThomas Lipton near Colombo, in Ceylon, by one of the head nurserymen inthe Lipton service, carried across the Pacific under glass so as to protect themfrom the dangerous breezes, and finally planted in American soil to supply anadequate test of whether tea culture is possible in this country. Although theyhave been set but a short time, there is every indication that the experimentwill prove successful, and that the San Diego Exposition will have given to thiscountry a new industry supplanting the annual importation of 90,000,000pounds of tea from the Orient.
