Dancing followed the games, and a mostpleasant evening ended with the distribution of prizes and ti:e awardingof the championship trophies to the winners of the various tournaments,while that most worthy cause The Kruger Fund netted a substantial sumthrough the efforts of the Association. While there are many other subjects and phases of the game wewould like to discuss, time and space will hardly admit of it. We willtherefore content ourselves witn expressing the hope that the variousorganizations that are seeking to help basketball will eventually arriveat some general agreement, formal or tacit, for the benefit of the gameand its players, and that the season now opening will exceed ail formerones in the amount of good accomplished, and the advancement of theNational Mid-Winter Sport.

EXPLANATORY. By THE EDITOR. The Protective Association rules differ in many respectsfrom any advanced up to the present time. The changes andadditions are the result of a careful, conscientious consider-ation of the opinions and suggestions of many, who havinga long and intimate acquaintance with the game, and beingknown to have its best interests at heart, seem peculiarlyfitted to know what changes time has rendered necessaryand advisable. While the subject has been approached ina spirit of fairness to the persons who in past seasonshave propounded rules which, to say the least, offer a sub-stantial foundation upon which to base improvement, never-theless it may as well be understood that in these rulesbasket ball is dealt with from a practical rather than atheoretical standpoint based on the simple, self-evidentlytruthful fact that it is a hard, strenuous game, the verynature of which presupposes a certain percentage ofvigorous, personal contact and hard knocks to its devoteesand th
