Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Northumberland Fusiliers, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph is a group shot of (from left to right) a sergeant, an officer and a private of the Northumberland Fusiliers. This regiment, also known as the Fifth Regiment of Foot, raised 52 battalions during World War I, more than any other regiment. They fought throughout the Western Front, and in Italy, Gallipoli and Egypt.

The regiment, now amalgamated into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was one of the first formed, with British troops, in Holland in 1674, going to England with William of Orange (1651-1702) when he became King William III of England in 1688.
[Original reads: 'An officer, a sergeant and a private soldier of the Northumberland Fusiliers.']
