Summary

[edit]
Description

A 20 km section of Oenotria Scopulus, a 1400 km long escarpment running across Mars' southern highland terrain in the regions of Terra Sabaea and Iapygia Terra. The escarpment, here about 1 km high, was likely formed during the impact that created the 1500 km wide Isidis Basin along the boundary of Mars' highlands and lowlands terrain.

Oenotria Scopulus follows a broad arc concentric to the outer rim of the impact basin about 2100 km from its center, suggesting that this marks an outer ring structure. These structures are extremely common in very large impacts and are likely due to material slumping and surging into the crater in the few minutes after the impact.

The escarpment has been heavily modified by erosion since its formation. Water and ice have cut into the escarpment, filling the valley floors with sedimentary deposits. The escarpment also represents the very top of a fault structure running deep into the Martian crust, which may have helped lava make its way to the surface, further filling the valley.

This image uses 40m/px color imagery collected with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's CRISM imaging spectrometer and 5m/px monochrome imagery collected with the orbiter's CTX camera. Both images were collected on September 29, 2012.
