especiallyby the Araljs and Persians, and used by the Hindus as incense inworship, consists of the dried root of Hedyclimm sjncatum, Smith,figured and described in the Botanical Magazine, t. 2,300, and inLoddiges Botanical Cabinet, t. 653. The w^ord Hedychium is derived from rjhv^;, s%veet, and %twz^, snoiv,in allusion to the fragrance, elegance and whiteness of the flowersof the original species (H. coronarmm) of this genus of Zingi-heracece, all of which are handsome plants with tuberous,herbaceous stems, clasping leaves, and a terminal spicateinflorescence. H. spicatum is a native of Xepal and Silhet. Dr. Stewartf saysit is not uncommon in the Punjab Himalayas up to near theJhelam at least, at from 3,500 to 7,000 feet. Dr. Dymock, in his Notes on Indian Drugs, says thatthis dried root forms a considerable article of commercein India and China, and is also exported to Europe.
