Description
English: Russia stampless folded letter to France. Unpaid category 2. 'ODESSA 19 IAN 1851' boxed cancel, manuscript '20' decimes rate, serrated box 'Aus Russland' (T.P.O.) transit, various transits and arrival backstamp Bordeaux. A letter with various scarce postmarks.

Details:

  • January 29 (Julian) 1851 unpaid letter posted by 'Zuckerbecker & Co Odessa' (blue oval marking at left with manuscript '10-2' - 10 February Gregorian calender). Post office placed handstamp 'Porto' and 'ODESSA 19 IAN 1851' postmark.
Dobin: Odessa 57.1.01 type 1.07. Postmark used for money correspondence and foreign mail, used 1849-1858, Rarity 6. Scarce postmark.[1]
  • February 18 (Gregorian) backstamped aboard the Berlin-Breslau travelling post office. 'BERLIN-BRESLAU RH 182'.
  • Red serrated boxed 'AUS RUSSLAND' postmark applied. Rare transit T.P.O. mark.
Vandervelde: type Ry1, 34x9mm.
  • February 18, Breslau based mail expeditions bureau number V applied mark. Red boxed 'K. PR POST-SPED. BUREAU No V. 18 2'
  • February 22. 'PRUSSE 3 VALENCIENNES 22 FEVR 51' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris. Rate was assessed at 20 decimes, and manuscript '20' applied.

  • February 24. Bordeaux arrival backstamp. 'BORDEAUX (32) - 24 FEVR 51' applied. Recipient had to pay 20 decimes (2 Francs).
