Description
English: Russia unpaid stampless folded letter Odessa to Marseille. 'ODESSA' oval cancel, manuscript '14' decimes rate, boxed 'AUS RUSSLAND' (T.P.O.) transit, various transits and arrival backstamp Marseille.

Details:

  • April 27 (Julian)/May 9 1856 (Gregorian) unpaid letter posted by 'VUCETICH & Co ODESSA' (blue oval marking at bottom left) to Pastré Frères Marseille. Letter inside datelined at Odessa showing both the 'old' Julian date of April 27 and the 'new' or Gregorian date of May 9. Post office placed script type handstamp 'Porto' (unpaid) and oval 'ODESSA' postmark.
Dobin: Odessa 57.1.01 type 1.05. Postmark for foreign mail, used 1846-1856, Rarity 4.[1]
  • May 16. (Gregorian) straight line transit backstamp aboard the Breslau-Berlin travelling post office 'BRESLAU-BERLIN 16 5 III'.
  • Black boxed 'AUS RUSSLAND' postmark applied. Transit T.P.O. marking showing mail 'From Russia'.

  • May 19. 'PRUSSE 3 VALnes 19 MAI 56' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris. Rate was assessed at 14 decimes, and manuscript '14' applied.

  • May 19. Paris transit backstamp
  • May 20. Paris to Lyon T.P.O. backstop, 1st section, Brigade F handled the mail. Day train, shown by the octagonal center.
