Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Felidae and Myrmecophagidae; Genus: Felis and Tamandua; Genus species: Felis pardalis and Tamandua tetradactyla. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 95-130 cm; Height: 40-50 cm; Weight: 11-16 kg; Identification: The ocelot is gray to buff in color with black spots, rings, and stripes; Habitat: Humid forests, thick brush, marshy areas; Diet: Carnivore: young deer, peccaries, agoutis, pacas, rodents, birds, snakes, fish; Reproduction: Mating takes place overnight. The female builds her den in a rocky bluff, hollow tree, or thicket. Two to four cubs are born after a gestation of 70-80 days; Social Structure: Males and females will often live in pairs with each other but will not hunt together; Behavior: Ocelots are nocturnal and extremely secretive; Status: Endangered: habitat loss, hunted for their fur; Interesting Facts: The ocelot has an unusually mild disposition, and babies are often sold as pets in South America.
