Description

The Occidental Hotel, Eureka, California on May 1, 1888

  • All visible people are male.
  • No electrical or telegraph wires, street is unpaved.
  • Left: sign reads J. Harling Cigar Factory, Belle Eureka, Harling’s Own. Behind that sign is one that ends in “WENS”
  • Left: Notice the gaslight near the classical portico building and the giant industrial building at the end of street.
  • Right: “Resturant” Beer, Coffee Stand, Meal, Tom & Jerry all on one sign, then a portico and sign at the Occidental Hotel. Further down the street is the Revere House, and the Janssen Building (422 First Street) followed by an illegible round sign at the next corner.
Located within the current Eureka Historic District, this hotel was demolished and the location is presently a parking lot.
