Lantern Slide (black and white), of a watercolour(?) sketch; view of the conical hilltop fort Potaketake, and numbering the different levels of the fort; Rapa Iti, Austral Islands. Context: It is not known who sketched this view. However, Routledge visited Rapa Iti on her second expedition in 1921-1923. The sketch was possibly made from image: Oc,G.T.1570. See also, Oc,G.T.1569 for a more general view of the fort. Overview of Routledge collection: This collection of lantern slides were photographed during two archaeological expeditions, conducted by William Scoresby Routledge and his wife Katherine Maria Routledge. The majority of the collection was photographed during the ‘Mana Expedition’ in 1913-1915 to Easter Island, which also stopped in Chile and Juan Fernandez Islands on route. Whilst in Chile, Routledge enlisted the aid of Chilean men and boys. One boy from Juan Fernandez is depicted in a number of images, used as a scale guide. Subsequent expeditions to Mangareva, Raivaevae, and Rapa Iti were made in 1921-1923, during which a smaller number of images were made. |
