Lantern Slide (black and white); view of the Marae Toa Maora wall made from stone slabs and coral pieces, rising up to four meters high; a Polynesian(?) man is sitting on the wall, in the centre, wearing a long sleeved cloth top, and a plant fibre hat; Temoe Island, Polynesia. Photographic process Context: many of coral pieces are up to 75cm in diameter, with no signs of basaltic. The structure is similar to the west central platfrom of Ahu Ura Uranga Te Mahina on Easter Island (compare with Oc,G.T.1783). Overview of Routledge collection: This collection of lantern slides were photographed during two archaeological expeditions, conducted by William Scoresby Routledge and his wife Katherine Maria Routledge. The majority of the collection was photographed during the ‘Mana Expedition’ in 1913-1915 to Easter Island, which also stopped in Chile and Juan Fernández Islands on route. Whilst in Chile, Routledge enlisted the aid of Chilean men and boys. One boy from Juan Fernandez is depicted in a number of images, used as a scale guide. Subsequent expeditions to Mangareva, Raivavae, and Rapa Iti were made in 1921-1923, during which a smaller number of images were made. |
