Description
English: Soldiers, Messines, Belgium, 1917. Group of five uniformed men posing for the camera. According to the caption they are standing in front of a German observation post. The ground behind them is muddy and covered in debris. A soldier in the background is walking towards what appears to be the remains of a wall or building.

The derogatory term for a German, 'Bosch', originates from the French slang 'alboche', which was two words 'Allemand' (German) and 'caboche' (pate, head) put together. The Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917), commanded by General Plumer, successfully relieved German pressure on the French Army.
