Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dominated by a monumental Tuscan tetrastyle portico is the façade of the Oakland Apartments in Buffalo, New York, as seen in November 2022. An outlier on a street otherwise lined with sumptuous privately-owned single-family mansions, this seven-unit apartment building was built by attorney-turned-real estate investor Joseph H. Morey, and was opened to occupancy by tenants on on May 1, 1910. Advertisements touted the building as "absolutely fireproof" and boasted of "hardwood floors, two baths, vacuum cleaner, [and] filtered water" in each unit, which were priced at $115-120 per month. Architecturally, the building's Neoclassical aesthetic is heavily indebted to the Colonial Revival: aside from the portico, note the front entrance whose sidelights extend into an unusual transom above the segmentally-arched door, and the six-over-six sash windows on the top floor which are crowned consecutively by a dentil row, modillion-bracketed cornice, parapet punctuated with smooth stone panels, and finally a flat roof.
