The first of the stand alone structure of the Modhera Sun Temple Complex. The large and deep step well or vav, the Surya Kund with many steps leading to the water below, each level marked with small steps and shrines spaced in equal distances.

| Description |
English: The more famous of the three structures of the entire complex, the rectangular water reservoir or step well locally known as the vav called the Surya Kund leads down to the water below in many levels. Each level is marked by small steps, built back to back on either side as mirror images and a cluster of them are placed at equal distances from each other around the entire rectangle of the stepwell. Each level also has small shrines (it is said that there are 108 in all), each dedicated to one god. The centre of the two lengths and the two breadths of the rectangle of topmost step or level has one large temple each which are also intricately carved. Two of the four large shrines are damaged and broken but the smaller ones are more or less intact. As the water in the reservoir recedes, the levels become exposed enabling the devotees to reach the water conveniently through the use of the steps. |
