English: The initial reactions (stage 1) of the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPPP): oxidative decarboxylation of glucose-6-phosphate, which yields NADPH for reductive biosynthesis and ribulose-5-phosphate (Ru5P).
The oxidative pentose phosphate pathway serves to produce NADPH, the reducing power for biosynthetic reactions. NADPH is also used to preserve the reduced form of glutathione. |
