Summary

Description
Italiano: Comparto Unione area ex-Falck

English: The building is a precious and distinctive example of a shed-style industrial facility, on account of both its size and the typological essence of the main structure. The OMEC (Officine Meccaniche e Costruzioni) Machine Shop is one of the most significant examples of particularly long industrial buildings in Italy.

The building was part of the Falck Unione industrial site. On the entrance façade the signage is still visible, according to Falck usage, an acronym of four letter s indicating the function of the building. The most significant productions developed inside this complex include much of the machinery installed in Falck and other factories. In the naval engineering field, many propellers were also produced, especially during the Second World War, and cast in the nearby Foundry. Like many other exemplars supplied to all Italian shipbuilding yards, the ‘Dritto di Poppa’ a large steel cast, was produced for the Leonardo da Vinci ship. We may also recall the large casts for the battleships Roma and Vittorio Veneto. On the façade is a stone commemorating the OMEC workers who lost their lives in the Resistance or were deported to concentration camps for their part in the struggle against Nazi-Fascism.

The building is placed in a brownfield area. It is part of the project of Sesto San Giovanni per l'UNESCO, the application for inscription on the world heritage list for humanity in the evolving cultural landscape category.
