The olive tree is native of the Mediterranean region, Western Asia and North Africa. The olive tree is an evergreen tree and has oblong shape silvery green leaves measuring 4 to 10 cm long and 1 to 3 cm wide. the fruit (olive) is 1 - 2.5 cm long. In spring small white flowers bloom from the axils of the leave. The olive leaves are used as a symbol of glory and peace. In both the Bible and the Quran, the olive tree and olives are mentioned several times. For example In the Bible, we learn how the dove came back to Noah’s ark with an olIve leaf in it’s beak. The village called Bethphage, on the Mount of Olives. In the Quran ( Sunan al-Darimi 69: 103 ) we read that The Prophet Mohamed said “ Take olive oil and massage with it, it is a blessed tree and in chapter 24 Al-Nur in the Quran we read “ Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth,,, lit from a blessed tree, an olive... The cultivation of olive trees began around 4000 BC. In MALTA the mass production of olive oil started during the Roman rule around 220 BC. At San Pawl Milqi near Burmarrad, there is an archaeological site of the Romans era, were olive oil was produced in large quantities - MALTA |
