Summary
[edit]DescriptionNumber 57 High Street, Winchester - geograph.org.uk - 870635.jpg |
English: Number 57 High Street, Winchester Former offices of the Hampshire Chronicle newspaper. The paper vacated these offices in around 2003 and they have been left like this ever since. A planning application in 2004 explained "57 High Street was probably part medieval but had a double bowed window Georgian façade onto the High Street. The passageway that ran alongside the buildings from the High Street to St Clements Street had been named after two spinster sisters, Sarah and Mary Hammond, who had rented what is now 57 High Street in 1767. The Hampshire Chronicle newspaper had been associated with the building from 1788 and the freehold was sold to the partnership of Jacob and Johnson (the current owners) in 1852."
The gent in front of the building may have been there because of the Hat Fair. |
