Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Dasyuromorpha; Family: Myrmecobiidae; Genus: Myrmecobius; Genus species: Myrmecobius fasciatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 17-27 cm; Identification: The numbat is red to black in color with lighter bands along the back. It also has black stripes across its eyes; Habitat: Forests; Diet: Carnivore: termites; Reproduction: Gestation lasts 14 days in numbats. The female has no pouch - her four offspring cling to her nipples as she carries them around; Behavior: Numbats are the only mammals in Australia that are strictly diurnal; Status: Endangered: habitat loss; only 2,000 animals surviving; Interesting Facts: Captive numbats have been recorded as eating up to 20,000 termites per day.
